No fewer than 13 passengers perish and ninety-eight injured in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key government projects.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” stated the national leader.

The president confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose term finished the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its duties in public projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, defying expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had also sparked significant questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party called for an urgent pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This halt was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."

In response, the president maintained that the train had been operating in full adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these strategic undertakings.
